The Journey Begins

Well 12 years after diving head first into the world of brains, neuroscience and therapy I find myself compelled to take my understanding and knowledge out into the world. I have developed a confidence that all families can thrive and all children can flourish when the environment is relationship rich with compassion and understanding.

As an adoptive parent with two amazing daughters I have learned more than I ever thought possible about what makes people behave the way they do. It’s rarely what you think either! Everyone is doing the best they can – why wouldn’t they? So what makes some people look like they self destruct? Why do some people struggle with depression or addiction? How can a someone reach a point where taking their own life seems like the best option? How can we make sense of these things?

When the structure and function of the brain is compromised by adverse experiences or trauma people are too often left with a life of unconscious pain. This is emotional pain and brains can’t even tell the difference. We can feel the pain of a broken heart, the pain of a lost love one, the pain of embarrassment or shame. It’s not easy to live with such pain so we find ways of coping. Humans are amazing at coping.  However, what helps us cope is to reduce the pain, the feelings of threat to our survival. Pain pushes us into self soothing and health harming behaviours.  Addiction could be justifiably described as ritualized serial self soothing.

    I came to you for advice a few times and truely valued every word you said to me. I now am studying year one of a psychology degree and hope to one day help others, whether it’s counselling or therapy. Thank you for taking the time to listen to me in my times of despair.
